We recently started sponsoring young swimming talent Jinth Engelse (15 years old). She shined at the Rotterdam Qualification Meet with three finals and impressive personal records in the 50/100 backstroke and 50 butterfly. Jinth also won 2nd prize with the 2nd highest Rudolph points for juniors in the Netherlands. Last weekend (Dec. 15-17) Jinth competed at the NK short course in The Hague. We spoke to her right after.

How long have you been swimming?
I've been swimming since I was 6e, now for nine years at the same club: Niemo Barracuda in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel. Since one and a half years I also swim at one of the KNZB Training Centers (OCs) in Rotterdam.

How do you combine swimming with school?
I train six times a week, which is about 14 hours. I'm in 4 vwo at a Loot school, the Thorbecke Talent School in Rotterdam. They make it possible for me to go to my training sessions besides school and make up lessons I miss at another time. I can also get a leave of absence if I go to competitions that are off weekends.

Do you have certain goals you want to work toward?
First is the European Youth Championships (EYK) in July 2024. And yes, ultimately it would be super if I get to swim a World Championship someday and maybe more....

What achievement are you most proud of?
Last summer I went with TeamNL to the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Slovenia. I got to start ten times there and finished 5th of Europe in the 100m and 200m backstroke. It was a great experience to witness. We stayed in an Olympic village and there was a real opening ceremony and closing. I will never forget this. But I am also proud of the fact that I achieved no less than seven Dutch records this year.

Are you happy with BeGlobal's sponsorship?
Of course! All the swimming, traveling, training, competitions and swimming gear involve high costs, and it is nice that BeGlobal wants to contribute to this. I am enormously grateful to them for that.

At the NK Korte Baan, Jinth once again proved her enormous talent. She became five times Dutch Youth Champion, on the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke and the 50m and 100m butterfly. She also won several second places and achieved 4 out of 7 Dutch Records.

Would you also like to support Jinth to achieve her dream of participating in the European Youth Championships in Lithuania in 2024? You can do so on her crowdfunding page From the Yvonne van Gennip Fund!
